This 20th anniversary version of the Myst soundtrack is not a direct reprint of the disc-based versions released in the '90s. It features extensive remastering by the composer Robyn Miller. Robyn's statement about the remastering:
"I mixed and added all the effects to this original Myst soundtrack from within a single Proteus MPS + synth. Producing the album that way gave me very little control, so the mix and e.q. was always a little off. This remastering was a great chance to make repairs along those lines. For example, there was a piece that had an annoying muddling drone, another had a single bass note that hit too hard. I was able to fix stuff like that. All the pieces needed at least some amount of e.q. tweaking."
"I also did a little with compression. A couple of the originals sounded flat to the extent that I remastered with compression for punch."
"On the original recordings I tended to use these big reverbs. I don't know why--I think I was enamored with them! Now I find they muddy the instrumentation. So on three or four of the worst offenders, I was able to go back in and strip away much of this reverb. Which is really great... you can hear instruments you never knew existed! The first piece on the soundtrack is a great example of this."
"Weirdly enough, on one of the pieces I actually added reverb! The reverb of a small studio."
"Those are the big things... there were numerous small dabbles here and there with different tools. Trying to make it sound good on everyone's system."
