I'm super honored that I was asked by Teh to work on the soundtrack for Spectrum of Hybrids. I'm especially excited to have been able to write and record some vocal tracks for a video game soundtrack, particularly one being developed by an old friend. I'm excited that I was able to combine my love for genres such as jangle pop and prog rock into a single album of music. I even managed to squeeze a low whistle in there.
My inner musicologist maintains that songs must contain the human voice as an instrument, and I feel like it is so rare to be able to put the word "songs" in the title of an album of video game music. To be fair, only the first five tracks are indeed songs, but as they are the focus of this release, I felt it would be appropriate to exclude a clarifying phrase such as "and some incidental music" for simplicity's sake. Moreover, I feel like this album's designation of "songs" will also highlight the fact that there is another part of the soundtrack composed by Bismii.
Speaking of the human voice, I'm very happy to once again be recording with singer Darby Cupit who sings the lead vocal parts on Microsecond of Mayhem and I Am Worth It. As these are songs that are sung by in-game characters, it was only appropriate to include another singer on this album for variety. As both a singer and a voice actor, Darby brings a real sense of life and energy to both of these songs. I am grateful to have Darby in my life as both a collaborator and a friend. Thank you again for recording for this project!
I sincerely hope that you enjoy this soundtrack, and I look forward to releasing Part 2 of this album in the future as the story and characters of Spectrum of Hybrids evolve.
Teh has this to say about Spectrum of Hybrids: "Spectrum of Hybrids is a labor of love that has been ongoing for five years, changing and adapting to its final form as a detailed Visual Novel. It would not be possible without the talents of several wonderful artists both visual and musical, nor without the input from its fans. Audio is just as big a part of the game as visuals are, and every effort is made to match the music with the moods, scenes, and characters. Thank you for your support!"
